Dictionary definition: a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations – used as a therapeutic technique.
Our version: a conscious approach to life, or to a given time segment, that allows one to be “in the moment” and open to new thoughts, feelings and possibilities. Mindfulness can also put space between you and your reactions to live around you – giving you a chance to change your reactions from conditioned, “knee jerk” responses to ones that may be more thoughtful, kinder, more meaningful.
We try to guide clients to mindfulness in all our activities: dance, fitness, etc., as well as in specific sessions devoted to learning more about how to consciously engage in mindful states. The goal is simply to help you in various aspects of your life:
- aid in meditation,
- lower stress levels
- manage pain
- improve communications with others
- enhance ability to focus
- elevate sense of well-being.
